Sebdenia polydactyla (Syn. Halymenia polydactyla)
Sebdenia polydactyla, also known by its synonym Halymenia polydactyla, is a striking species of red macroalgae in the family Sebdeniaceae. It is characterized by its vibrant reddish color and distinctive, lobed fronds that resemble finger-like projections—reflected in the species name polydactyla, meaning "many fingers." Because of its soft, gelatinous texture and unique appearance, it has also been referred to as “jelly fingers.”
This species typically inhabits tropical and subtropical marine environments, growing on rocky substrates in shallow reef areas. Its flowing fronds provide shelter for small marine organisms and contribute to the biodiversity and nutrient cycling of coral reef ecosystems.
While not widely commercialized, Sebdenia polydactyla is occasionally noted for its aesthetic appeal and potential in culinary or cosmetic contexts. It is valued primarily for its ecological role and distinctive beauty.
