Copepod Dosing – Seeding & Maintenance for Reef Aquariums

Recommended Dose:

➡️ 350 mL per 100 L of aquarium volume — monthly

This is our standard recommendation for building and maintaining a healthy copepod population in most reef tanks.

> 💡 Ideal Dose for Maximum Results:

350 mL per 100 L weekly

For tanks with high pod demand (e.g. due to pod-eating fish), this will yield stronger, faster results—though we understand this may not be financially sustainable for every aquarist.

How to Maximise Copepod Success

🦐 Copepods are essential microfauna that support reef biodiversity, clean detritus, and feed finicky fish. To maintain a thriving population:

1. Seed your tank with a live copepod culture (350 mL per 100 L).

2. Feed that population daily with live phytoplankton.

Phytoplankton Feeding Guide

To support and multiply your copepod population, dose any of the following at a minimum of 25 mL per 100 L daily:

Nannochloropsis

Hulk Juice

Gold Rush

Reef’s Choice (six-strain blend for maximum biodiversity)

> 🌿 Phytoplankton can be dosed at much higher levels depending on your tank's needs.

We encourage you to read the detailed instructions for each blend to find the ideal dosing rate for your system.

Do You Need to Re-dose Copepods Regularly?

🔄 Yes – if you have pod predators.

If your tank includes any of the following:

🐟 Mandarin Dragonets

🐟 Copperband Butterflies

🐟 Wrasses

...then regular monthly seeding is highly recommended, as these fish actively consume pods.

✅ No – if you don’t have pod-hunting fish.

A single strong seeding with consistent phytoplankton feeding may be all you need for a self-sustaining copepod population.
